NORTHERN - THirsk 1.40 Apprentice Handicap - Class 6 - 1 mile 4 furlongs - Soft - 16 run

The Going is officially described as soft and some rain is due from around the time that this race starts so I think we can assume the Going description will be accurate.

The market suggests that Fen Tiger will be the one to beat at around 2/1 and as always if you want a "win saver" feel free, it is going to take a fair bit of beating on form figures, although 2/1 is very skinny.

We (SP2A) tipped Das Kapital on a return to racing at Ffos Llas last time when it was runner up, i think it holds a decent each way chance here but the price doesn't really excite me. Another Odyssey has to prove it can handle soft turf and Bellshill Beauty is solid but not crying out as a winner in waiting. One to keep an eye on and TRACK (add to Trackers) is Bigbadboy who comes off a break of almost a year but who has some decent back-form at around this trip and on soft ground and with the weather having now turned, it could pick up an Autumn race once race-fit..

Wildmountainthyme is basically disappointing but it's best run recently was on soft at Hamilton at this kind of trip and that gives it a squeak.

At big odds if you want to have a small investment (£1 e/w type bet) then SEVEN FOR A POUND may be of interest finally upped to 12 furlongs after a long stint at 10 furlongs. It won over the shorter trip off a mark of 46, seems adept enough with some cut in the ground and looks over-priced to me. SELECTO also has a bit of soft ground form from its early days with Roger Charlton and is another who could outrun big odds.

The standout pair for me for a small e/w investment though are SAULIRE STAR drawn on the inside in Stall 1, has a win at the Distance and handles soft and has a last win mark of 51 so clearly well handicapped if enjoying the conditions off a mark of 49. It will be disappointing if it's not placed at least.

The other one is JENNY REN a Course and Distance winner off a mark of 53, mainly kept to AW where she ran very well last time, it handles soft ground on turf and may have been cleverly placed here and the impressive Gina Manhan gets the leg up.

TRACKER - Saulire Star / Shrapnel - Jenny Ren (£1 e/w Seven For A Pound + Selecto)

NORTHERN 3.20 Selling Handicap - Class 6 - 6 furlongs - Soft - 15 run

Clearly basement level stuff but something has to win and place and a few caught my eye.

Bomb Squad looks just about as bomb proof as you can find at this level if you want a win or each way saver on it. Its in good AW form but was runner up on the soft ground at Chepstow off a mark of 50 last September on a rare foray on to turf.

Hard Solution comes from a top yard but may prefer better going, Decontracte may yet show some actual talent on the racecourse and ORCHID ROSE looks to be worth a £1 each way poke at the early prices based on a decent staying on run over 5 furlongs here earlier in the season and a low draw in the conditions may not be a negative.

Purely on form STRONSAY who was competitive on soft ground last Autumn and 5 and 6 furlongs and whose mark is now gradually reducing and MARSELAN a Course and Distance winner off a mark of 62 in the Spring but who is now down to a mark of 47, look the best options but with higher draws that may not be particularly advantageous we'll stick to a shrapnel (1/4 point e/w) bet on each.

Shrapnel - Stronsay + Marselan (£1 e/w on Orchid Rose)
