Kelso Sunday 5th December
By UK Flat / AW (Northern)
NORTHERN - Kelso 1.03 - Borders National - Handicap Chase - 4 miles and 1/2 furlong - 13 run - Good to Soft (rain about)
A similar tale here really with a very strongly backed favourite from Elliott in Weststreet (formerly with Oliver Sherwood) and if you want a win saver take it. It's pulled up only run here when with Sherwood has won though at 4 miles and clearly a massive danger.
Almazar Garde represents the buoyant Longsdon yard and is equally well fancied and backed but is as yet unproven beyond 3 miles and 3 furlongs and one I am happy to take on with that in mind.
I narrowed it down to 4 more likely ones at nice odds and will leave out Strong Economy who was a distant 6th in the Eider but not really close enough for me to conclusively think this is the right trip for it today and in possibly deteriorating ground.
BIG RIVER has an excellent Course record and it's not churlish to suggest its probably a stone better here than anywhere else on form figures. Lucinda Russell has given the horse a run, this will clearly be a target race for local connections and it has a strong chance. CHILDSWELL has a good Course record too, has proven stamina and Nicky Richards too looks to have targeted the race for this horse. Hard to leave out too DINO BOY @ 10/1 who won this last year off 7lbs less and was left clear by an unseating favourite last time. Clearly though likely to be a factor again.
In order of preference I will go with BIG RIVER and CHILDSWELL with some shrapnel on Dino Boy if you want it. I'll leave the win saver on Weststreet totally up to punter discretion.
TRACKERS - BIG RIVER and CHILDSWELL
In the 2.43 race again the market looks likely to dictate with Grand Voyage and Geonice but something has to finish 3rd so I'll have a Tracker bet on FEVER ROQUE for Rebecca Menzies who I think will come on for seasonal debut and may be play a canny Tricast too.
The Jad Factor may be picking up a small race in time and worth tracking Fair Minx after today for Sandy Thompson as I think there is potential there too in the longer term.
TRACKER - FEVER ROQUE.
