NORTHERN-:
Haydock 2.25 Handicap Hurdle - Class 1 - 3 miles + 1/2 furlong - 13 Run - Soft
A race stacked with nice potential future winners and horses to follow and in many ways the puzzle is finding the ones most forward in terms of fitness who are good enough to win today and assessing those who'll definitely come on for the run and probably targeted at later dates.
At the bottom of the market I am intrigued by Tronador for Gordon Elliott who is upped to 3 miles for the first time as far as I can tell and with the booking of Brian Hughes adding to the interest. That in itself has to be worth a small saver e/w bet.
Aside from that; Botox Has; is interesting on last season's form, has the benefit of a run already and a solid each way chance, my only real niggle would be the Going, but at a nice price is one I fear the most outside the selections. Get A tonic is a highly rated Mare from the Nick Skelton yard who I think will improve for the run, Complete Unknown from the Nicholls yard is another with some potential who should improve for the outing and needs to prove it can get 3 miles too, Good Risk At All, had a nice win on its return at 2 and a half miles and gets a 6lbs penalty and is another who has to conclusively prove its stamina down this long and unforgiving Straight.
Run For oscar won the Cesarewitch and does have some good Hurdles form but this Going, the mark and the extended 3 miles honestly puts me off at the price and similarly Might I for Harry Fry, a progressive horse on seasonal debut and another upped in trip is another i'd prefer to watch today.
The pair who I think get their conditions and with less to prove in them and who are good enough to take advantage at nice prices are WHOLESTONE and WAKOOL and I also like BRINKLEY.
WHOLESTONE has Course and Distance winning form, enjoys the trip, won't have any Going concerns and with the benefit of a run and off a mark of 146 should easily outrun its Odds, WAKOOL is very progressive for Nick Alexander, the trip and the Going hold no fears, it has risen from a mark of 103 to 133 and now upped to 142, it's in form and deserves the chance. BRINKLEY comes from the Pipe yard, on seasonal debut and back hurdling, but has run fresh and is on a very nice Hurdle handicap mark, if fit enough I think it'll love these conditions.
TIP - Wholestone / Tracker - Brinkley / Shrapnel - Wakool + Tronador

Haydock 3.35 - Handicap Chase - Class 2 - 3 miles 1 and 1/2 furlongs - 12 run - Soft
I am going to TRACK (add to our Tracker) a few of these in anticipation that they will come on for today's run and will have medium term targets. Crosspark has been off for 574 days and moved to Nick Kent from the retired Caroline Bailey and looks a potentially well treated Spring horse to me. Musical Slave was very progressive last season after a wind operation, it's likely to just need this for Phillip Hobbs yard, The Big Breakaway from the Tizzard yard is talented but clear fragile and is also likely to improve for the run off a 266 day break. Truckers Lodge from the Nicholls yard, a Midlands National winner, looks sure to be aimed at the Welsh National and I'm sure they will have left something to work on after today and will see this as an ideal prep run on nice Going giving them around 5 weeks to get the horse spot on.
Venetia Williams awaits her first winner of the season and has never been afraid to wait and I think Fontaine Collonges will also need this run and Houston Texas (for my nemesis Mr Richards) is stepped up in Class but is in excellent form with wins off 103, 111, 116 and now 122 and Richards will be keen to see if he may have a National horse in the making?
I'm most interested in 3 horses though on the day.
LORD DU MESNIL has good Course form, has won over an extended 3 miles and 3 furlongs and is below that winning mark and looks dangerous off a mark of 146 here. The benefit of a run cannot be under-estimated.
GOOD BOY BOBBY from the Twiston-Davies yard has also had a run and will come on leaps and bounds for it. It ran up a 1-2-1 sequence last Autumn off marks from 138 to 146 and has come back to that last winning mark.
At bigger odds I wouldn't rule out RAPPER for Henry Daly, another who has the benefit of a run already, progressive at this sort of trip and is back below a mark of 140. I think it can outrun generous Odds here.
