A decent race for the Course and a competitive field.
I am eager to take on Courtland who has been in excellent form running up a sequence from 109 to 128, upped in trip and to a mark of 134, I think this one is vulnerable. Brief Times has also won its last 2 races off marks of 125 and 129 and also seems vulnerable off a mark of 137. Go On Chez is an eye-catching 16lbs above its best win mark too, so I have significant doubts about the current top 3 in the market.
Saint Arvans is solid and consistent and off a static sort of mark and was considered and very much a danger, Ruthless Article is in the TRACKER but is inconsistent and has become a bit of a Uttoxeter specialist, Peregrine Run is an Irish raider who sluiced up in this race last year and seems laid out to run another bold race but its 9lbs above last years mark (although it did subsequently win at Chepstow off this mark of 147), and I think this is a deeper field than last year so reluctantly left out tonight. Gats and Co is another in the Tracker who is off a reduced mark but who would have preferred more rain and who may be best around Chepstow, so we'll very much keep an eye open for that in a few months time.
My favoured threesome are very much headed by HELL RED for Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden, PFN has bought this one along patiently, plenty of promise and as a 6 year old now and after another summer strengthening up you'd anticipate it being fit enough and both very capable and very likely to be running and winning off marks higher than tonights mark . I am very keen at bigger odds on ORGANDI who was placed in this race last year, looks prepped to at least emulate that and who runs off 7lbs lower and also having won after the place run here last year over an extended 3 miles at Warwick thus proving it can really run on full gas over this intermediate trip.
For some "shrapnel" if you wish, I'd also suggest a small stake each way on ERITAGE, back over fences and an impressive winner over 2 miles and 5 furlongs, a horse who can run very sweetly in to a race and almost certainly some untapped potential at this trip and off a mark 5lbs below its best winning mark for the Hosie yard who are very capable at tilting for this nice prize with a bit of a dark horse.
