Newbury 5.00 - Apprentice Handicap - Class 5 - 1 mile 3 furlongs - 15 run

 

A tricky looking race with the soft ground probably going to catch a few out and the trip here always on the tough side so we are looking for some proven stamina in these conditions.

 

At the top of the market, Suns Up Guns Up may not appreciate the ground so I want to oppose at the price,Polar Cloud is so far a better AW horse than Turf horse and Lady Reset may not have too much in hand off this handicap mark.

 

At more lucrative Odds, Carp Kid is up 3 lbs for a workmanlike win on Good to Firm Going at Lingfield, Corozonada ran on over 10 furlongs last time and looked like it may appreciate this trip but is better it seems on better ground and Frozen Waters is another whose form so far leaves doubts about the trip and the Going despite being from the always powerful and dangerous here local Hannon yard.

 

So, I'm left with a couple at speculative prices who I have most confidence in.

 

SELECTO from Mick Channons locally based Yard is a horse who needs to refind form and sparkle but should be rock hard race fit and best recent effort was runner up on soft down the long Doncaster straight on soft Going, on that basis and off a handicap mark that looks worth an interest and I think can take a hand here.

 

FIRST CHARGE whose sole win was at 10 furlongs on soft Going at Doncaster off a mark of 67 has had a couple of very poor runs so far. However, this looks like the best chance since that win off a mark 7lbs lower at 58 and the long straight and soft ground here would be very similar to conditions experienced when winning at Doncaster. I will be disappointed if we don't get a much better run in these conditions.
