Sunday 21st April

It was a very depressing afternoon watching our selections at Ayr in the Scottish National fall by the wayside with the exception of Git Maker, and selections in both Newbury races flattered to deceive and deliver nothing at Newbury and we could easily have been writing about a terrible day. Thankfully, the mood and most of the losses were mitigated by an excellent 20/1 win at Thirsk for Two Brothers at 20/1 SP and that was backed up by an enhanced place for Faylaq.

It also I think supported a couple of suppositions made yesterday, one that on Saturdays in the Summer with plenty of afternoon and evening Racing it may on occasions be prudent to leave the big marquee handicaps and races if they look like complete minefields to find lesser races like the one at Thirsk and also the fact that we've probably kept our Northern Expert going too long over the Jumps in desperate ground, and that his obvious Flat Turf prowess, amply evidenced last summer , together with his winter AW expertise, are now the best avenue to profit for all concerned.

There is Racing today at Stratford and Wincanton over the Jumps, we looked at a couple of races at both venues but markets look about right and we could not find any real each way value with the required confidence, there is Jumping too at Tramore and Flat Turf at Musselburgh, but we'll head to The Curragh for a couple of big field handicaps that Sean thinks are far less deep than 21 and 28 runner fields suggest and he has quiet confidence in some nicely priced selections. The televised (ITV 4) Musselburgh Card looks a complete minefield to be honest but if you do fancy a fun dabble sat in front of the TV the old (High Draw in Sprints) / (Low Draw round the tight bends) theory does tend to prove accurate often enough to base your selections more draw based than obvious form based!
